60th anniversary of Beatles gig in Gloucester

It was exactly 60 years ago on Saturday (March 18th) that the Beatles made their only appearance in Gloucester - just as they were on the threshold of worldwide fame.

At the time that the Fab Four performed at the city's Regal Cinema (now the Wetherspoons pub of the same name on King's Square) John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr had released only two singles, Love Me Do and Please Please Me.

Four days after their 1963 appearance at the Regal, the group's first album, Please Please Me, was released commercially.

The Fab Four were at that time embarking on a tour supporting Chris Montez, known for his hits Let's Dance and Some Kinda Fun, and Tommy Roe, who had a top three hit with Sheila in 1962.

The Beatles played on the Gloucester stage for just over 20 minutes and their set list featured Love Me Do, Misery, A Taste of Honey, Do You Want to Know a Secret? Please Please Me and I Saw Her Standing There.

However, it was after the band's performance at the Odeon in Cheltenham the following November, that the phrase 'Beatlemania' was said to have first been coined in a newspaper headline.

The Beatles had performed at the Stroud Subscription Rooms a year prior to their Gloucester gig, on March 31st, 1962.
