Youngsters discover the world of cyber security at free workshop

Tech-savvy teenagers enjoyed a free cyber security workshop at SGS College's Berkeley GREEN Campus.

Workshop participants were taught about the methods used by cyber security firms to stop hackers from illegally gaining access to private information from companies and individuals.

This workshop acted as an ideal introduction into one of the fastest growing and most profitable industries in the UK, where skilled workers are in hot demand.

The Government is to spend £1.9billion over the next five years on cyber-defences, recruiting thousands of new staff across the three intelligence agencies and establishing the first National Cyber Centre.

Andy Keenan, interim principal at Berkeley GREEN Campus, said: "This course is a fantastic introduction into a rapidly growing industry. The participants had a lot of fun, transforming websites and defending against computer hacks.

"The workshop was also a great opportunity for learners to see whether they would like to study for a career in cyber security.

"Students don't have to be ultra computer savvy; employers are looking for great problem solvers, strong communicators, and quick thinkers."

The Berkeley GREEN Campus will be open to prospective students, friends and family, Saturday, 25 March, 10am to 12pm, for an SGS open event, where visitors can discover the vast array of learning opportunities, speak with course specialists, take part in a range of hands on activities and take a tour of the impressive facilities including the brand new skills centre.
