The cheapest (and the most expensive) convenience stores revealed
6th March 2017
A new survey has shown which convenience shops run by the big food stores have the best bargains.
Trading magazine The Grocer looked into the convenience stores owned by the Co-op, M&S Simply Food, Morrison's Daily, Tesco Express, Sainsbury's Local and Little Waitrose.
They bought a basket of nine basic everyday items including bread, milk, teabags, spaghetti, lasagne, Walkers Crisps, Coca-Cola, Ben & Jerry's ice cream and a bottle of Blossom Hill wine.
The study showed that Sainsbury's was the cheapest at £17.44 and in second place was Tesco at £18.28. The big surprise was Waitrose which was third place at £19.99 with Morrison's trailing behind by 49p at £20.48. The Co-op was fifth on £21.44 with M&S in last position at £24.45.
The Grocer said "Sainsbury's strapline is 'Live well for less' so it will be pleased to have emerged with the cheapest basket of the six, some 29per cent cheaper than M&S".
