Hundreds of roles face axe in managerial shake-up

Nearly 2,000 deputy managers are set to lose their jobs at one of the UK's biggest supermarkets, according to reports.

Tesco is planning to wields the axe across its portfolio of Express convenience stores in a move it says will "improve our service to customers".

The Retail Gazette has reported that the 1,700 staff affected by the shake-up will have the option of applying for what are described as 3,300 lower-paid 'shift leader' roles.

A Tesco spokesman told the Retail Gazette: "To help improve our service to customers in our Express stores we are aiming to have more of our colleagues on the shop floor, more often.

"To help achieve this we are creating more than 3,300 shift leader roles which, in turn, means we will no longer have deputy managers.

"We appreciate that these changes will impact our deputy manager colleagues, and will do everything we can to support them throughout this period."
