Regeneration of Gloucester moves up a gear

One of the most significant redevelopment schemes Gloucester has seen in recent years is gathering pace.

And city council leader Cllr Paul James says the work on transforming the Barbican car park into student accommodation is making good progress after just a month.

The new student accommodation is part of the £135million regeneration of Gloucester Quayside and Blackfriars areas.

Comprising of 295 bedrooms it will include townhouses, cluster flats and studio bedrooms across four blocks, providing a welcome economic boost for the city centre.

As well as the student accommodation there will also be a newly-laid out car park with the entrance from Barbican Way and the general public will also have access through the new site via a pedestrianised area linking Ladybellgate Street to Barbican Way.

As our pictures show (right) a lot has already changed since the beginning of May when the first picture was taken. The site is now a hive of activity. The third image shows how the completed development will look.

Councillor Paul James said: "It's great to see the contractors making good progress at the Barbican.

"We know that they will have to pull out all the stops to get the accommodation ready to be occupied by September next year and they certainly look to be working at pace.

"After so many years of waiting, it's satisfying to see this site being transformed."
