Popular city centre car park is facing closure
24th April 2017
Motorists are being warned about the imminent closure of one of the main car parks in Gloucester as a multi-million pound city centre redevelopment scheme gathers pace.
The Barbican Car Park on Ladybellegate Street, which is popular with visitors to nearby Gloucester Docks, commuters and shoppers, will be shutting on Friday, 5 May until further notice, according to signs around the site.
Alternative places to park close by include Ladybellgate Car Park, although spaces could be at a premium.
The work on Barbican Car Park, which is being turned into a site for student accommodation, forms part of the regeneration of Gloucester's Quayside and Blackfriars areas.
The accommodation will be provided in a mix of townhouses, cluster flats and studio bedrooms across four blocks, together with ancillary supporting areas.
In total, it will comprise 295 bedrooms.
Under the new scheme, the general public will have access through the site via a pedestrianised street that will link Barbican Way to Ladybellgate Street.
A newly-laid out car park with entrance from Barbican Way will provide nearly 100 additional spaces for general public use.
Already well under way as part of the scheme is the refurbishment of Shire Hall and work to turn the former magistrates court into a new adults and children's services hub.
