New look in the pipeline for shopping mall
3rd May 2017
A major shopping centre in Gloucestershire could undergo a multi-million makeover, according to reports.
Dransfield Properties, based in Sheffield, is reportedly in advanced negotiations to buy Merrywalks shopping mall in from Streetlands Limited with a view to refurbishing the Stroud town centre premises.
In response, Stroud District Council have postponed a decision over plans for an Aldi store in the town.
Merrywalks, which was built in 1973 and links the town centre with the bus station, is home to a number of local businesses and national chains.
A spokeswoman for Dransfield Properties, Amanda Holmes, told the Stroud News and Journal that its plans had the potential to attract new retailers.
"We were approached to look at Merrywalks in Stroud and believe this is a town centre development which can be turned around and regenerated with some high-quality architecture and a new retail offer attracting companies not currently represented in the town centre," she said.
"We can't give further details of the retail line-up at this early stage."
