A proposed £150million investment in road improvements is set to be discussed by Gloucestershire County Council.

The council said it needed to find a new way of working to make the most of the cash injection over the next five years.

Cabinet will discuss how to turn the investment into improvements that will have greatest impact on the county's highways, such as eradicating potholes, and make sure the council is well prepared to carry out the works across the county.

This will include looking at best practice from other councils and gaining an in-depth understanding of the needs of local communities.

The findings will be presented to cabinet to put plans in place for the future and decide what sort of contract will be needed.

Cllr Vernon Smith, cabinet member for highways and flood, said: "We plan to put £150m into our county's highways - this will make a massive improvement to Gloucestershire's roads.

"As a result we need to update our working arrangements to make sure they properly support that extra investment.

"We will be looking at best practice right across the country, to make sure we get the best deal for Gloucestershire.

"Next month's cabinet discussion will set out our plan to learn from the best and listen to our communities with a decision in autumn about the best way forward."

In the meantime, the council will be continuing to work with Amey until the end of its contract in March 2019.

Resurfacing local roads most in need will be the priority for a new five-year investment into Gloucestershire's highways.

Overall the council expects to double the amount of similar work in a normal annual programme.
