Morrisons sales grow as overall grocery sales are up
4th May 2017
Grocery sales are up by 3.7 per cent over the last quarter, with Morrisons growing faster than its big four rivals.
Figures from Kantar Worldpanel show that the grocery market grew at its fastest rate since September 2013, in the 12 weeks to 23rd April 2017. The rise is worth almost £1bn in additional sales to the UK grocery sector.
While all of the big four supermarkets have seen their sales increase, it is Morrisons which has seen the biggest jump, with like-for-like sales up by 3.4 per cent, as reported by the BBC . The chain has managed to keep prices competitive, despite the fall in the value of the pound since the Brexit vote.
Closing the M convenience stores and introducing 'The Best' premium line, which has attracted more affluent shoppers to the stores, have helped boost sales at Morrisons.
Sainsburys saw the smallest growth of the big four retailers, with a 1.7 per cent sales rise. Sales of fruit, vegetables and salad were up by 2.6 per cent, suggesting the 'Food Dancing' campaign has got more people interested in cooking from scratch. But stronger growth among its rivals meant the supermarket's market share fell to 16.1 per cent.
