Massive traffic chaos on way for drivers at major road junction? - NEW COMMENT

Motorists are today being warned that all the traffic lights at one of the busiest junctions in Gloucestershire are being switched off for up to four months.

Gloucestershire County Council has said that from Monday the current traffic lights at Elmbridge Court roundabout in Gloucester will be switched off as part of the ongoing multi-million pound road improvement scheme.

Once the current lights have been removed, crews will then start removing the existing signals and installing new ones.

But the council said that while the Elmbridge improvement scheme is currently on schedule, it is anticipated that the traffic light replacement work won't be completed until September.

The council said that because the installation of the new traffic lights is a complex job, the work will have to be carried out in specific phases in order to keep the roundabout open at all times throughout the works.

Firstly, the existing lights will be removed. The new signal bases, poles and cable ducting will then be installed.

To ensure safety, new road markings will be put in place at the non-signalised junctions.

The existing 'stop' lines will be removed and replaced with 'give-way' markings.

The updated system cannot be fully completed until all the traffic detectors are in place.

This will begin once the whole roundabout has been resurfaced.

In the meantime, signage will be in place on all of the approaches to the roundabout informing drivers to the absence of signals.

Scott Macaulay-Lowe, team leader for the Elmbridge scheme at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "Replacing the traffic lights at Elmbridge Court is a complicated process, but a necessary one.

"Removing and replacing individual traffic lights is not a timely process. However, we're not able to fully switch on the new lights until we have replaced the whole system.

"We are continuing to make good progress on the roundabout and we'd like to thank all road users for their continued patience whilst we carry out this work."

Readers' comments:

Keith Wray: I really think they should remove the lights and see how it works before replacing them.

I have always thought that lights on roundabouts cause even more congestion.

Traffic waits at the light to enter the roundabout. Then enters and waits again at a light and blocks the roundabout.

Either have roundabouts or traffic lights.
