The end is in sight for the replacement of a weak bridge which has disrupted traffic on a major county road.

Work to improve Berkeley Bridge on the A38 continues following the removal of the old bridge in February.

The old structure, which weighed nearly 100 tonnes, was lifted out using a specialist crane that had enough reach and strength to move it. The crane was then used to install the beams for the new bridge at the same time.

The work on the bridge has been completed and the attention turns to improving the road in the area. These works include installing new barriers, kerbing, surfacing and white lining.

The barriers have to have foundations installed in order to make sure that they can offer the most protection to motorists and pedestrians alike.

Due to the poor quality of ground in the area there have had to be changes made to where these foundations go. This has meant working alongside BT to make re-designs to their system that runs underneath the road.

Wales and West Utilities have also used the opportunity to access their network to help minimise the amount of disruption in the area.

Mark Darlow-Joy, highways contracts manager at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "We put a huge amount of time and effort into moving the old bridge which was an extremely technical operation requiring time and skill.

"The new structure is now in place and work will be focussing on making improvements to the road layout in the area once the safety barriers have been installed.

"I would again like to thank everyone for their continued patience whilst the work has taken place."

The road will remain under traffic light control until the 30 June when the new bridge will open.
