Landlord fined over house in "terrible state"

A crackdown on rogue landlords is continuing in Gloucestershire after 10 people were found living in a "dangerous" five-bedroomed house.

Mohammed Moynul Islam, the owner of 22/24 Ryecroft Street in Gloucester, was successfully prosecuted at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court for offences under the Housing Act 2004.

The court heard how Mr Moynul Islam failed to produce relevant documents and breached management regulations.

The property had no fire escape and dangerous structural damage.

Its electrical fittings were faulty and there was no evidence of gas safety checks having ever been carried out.

In court, it was described it as being in a "terrible state" and "dangerous and unfit to live in".

After entering a guilty plea, the court ordered Mr Moynul Islam to pay a £1,230 fine and £750 in court costs.

This latest prosecution is as a result of the ongoing inspections of houses in multiple occupations in the city centre by Gloucester City Council and Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service.

Including this one, there have now been six convictions.

Julie Wight, private sector housing manager at Gloucester City Council, said: "It's appalling that tenants were expected to live in such poor and dangerous conditions.

"We will continue to bring these rogue landlords to court to make them accountable for their actions."

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure at Gloucestershire County Council, said: "It is absolutely vital that landlords are looking after tenants safety by complying with regulations.

"Failure to do this could ultimately lead to tragic and preventable consequences and we are determined to stop that happening."
