Gloucester MP highlights rapid growth in NHS apprenticeships

Gloucester MP Richard Graham has visited the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital during National Apprenticeship Week to highlight the NHS contribution to the rapid growth in apprenticeships.

Mr Graham said the Government was committed to delivering three million more apprenticeships between 2015 - 2020 and his goal was for 5,000 apprenticeship starts in Gloucester.

"We've made a good start with 1,360 in 2015/16. The NHS locally, and the Hospitals Trust in particular, is a big part of this and I want to celebrate this," said the MP.

"Our bid this year for a Health University Technical College will also encourage career paths into health apprenticeships and degrees, and I'm working closely with the NHS on this."

The Gloucestershire NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust currently employs 72 apprentices including Health Care Assistant and Customer Service roles.

Deborah Lee, CEO of the NHSHFT said: "we offer apprenticeships in a whole range of different jobs from business admin to IT as well as healthcare. They're a key driver of our workforce development strategy and our commitment to involvement in the local community, and the number and value of our apprentices will continue to increase."

Gloucestershire NHS Care Services have also hired over 36 apprentices since June and will increase with more vacancies including in healthcare, business admin, IT and customer services.
