Disused prison to become haven for visitors
29th March 2017
The former Gloucester Prison is set to become the city's latest visitor attraction.
The disused jail is owned by specialist developers City & Country who plan to turn it into homes.
But in the meantime it is being leased to Jailhouse Tours on a temporary basis, it is reported on gloucestershirelive.co.uk
Because of the difficult nature of the site, with some buildings which are protected and cannot be altered, City & Country have to negotiate with the authorities to arrive at an acceptable plan.
But the developer says it is still committed to the long-term future of the site.
The grim jail with its forbidding walls and floodlights is going to be redeveloped with 210 residential units.
And, if all goes to plan, the former HM Prison Gloucester is probably going to become the coolest and most original place to live in Gloucestershire.
City & Country had considered converting the historic prison into a luxury hotel. But that has been abandoned because of the practical difficulties on such a complex site.
