Daredevil Betty's boost for cancer charity

An intrepid 88-year-old former nurse is set to become Britain's oldest female wingwalker to raise money for Cheltenham charity Cobalt.

Betty Bromage will be strapped tight to the wings of a vintage plane and begin her take off for the skies at Gloucestershire airport at Staverton on Tuesday 6 June at 3pm.

Betty will be donating the funds from this experience to the charity Cobalt that specialises in medical imaging and mobile scanners.

Her efforts will help the Cobalt Medical Imaging centre in Cheltenham to purchase a new MRI scanner. It will have the latest software to ensure high definition specialist images including those of neurology and musculoskeletal for both research and clinical patients.

Cobalt wants to be one of the few centres in the UK to offer a more relaxed experience for patients and this will also give higher quality images.

Betty, who retired from nursing 23 years ago, loves to spend her spare time being active with her family and friends.

Speaking about the challenge ahead Betty said: "I plan to make the most of my life.

"Whilst others at my age might prefer to take it easy, I just love the adrenaline rush of doing something as extreme as a wingwalk.

"I'm fit and healthy so there's nothing to stop me.

"I'm really looking forward to it and raising as much money for Cobalt as I can. It's such a worthwhile cause."

Kirsty Bradbury, fundraising engagement officer for Cobalt said: "When Betty came to tell us what she had planned to raise money for Cobalt we were so excited.

"Challenge events are a great way to raise money for us as well as drawing attention to the work we do."
