County tradespeople rally to support BBC's DIY SOS
22nd June 2017
Community-minded local businesses and organisations have been lending their support to the latest building project of the BBC programme DIY SOS.
Led by presenter Nick Knowles, the team helps change the lives of deserving people by rallying skilled volunteers to carry out major alterations and improvements to homes.
The most recent project saw DIY SOS descend on Avening, near Stroud to transform the home of Ben Wernham and Ella Constable. Dad Ben was paralysed during a swimming accident on holiday and the alterations mean he will now be able to return to his home from hospital.
Amongst those taking part were electrician Micah Rose and apprentice plumber Aaron Rogers from Severnvale Housing, the Ashchurch-based housing association.
Severnvale has properties next to the site in Avening and with the other volunteers Micah and Aaron have been working through one of the hottest weeks of the year.
Severnvale Housing's external communications manager Liz Lewis said: "We were approached by DIY SOS because we own the properties next door to the house being made over and they needed to use our parking spaces.
"I immediately thought what a great opportunity it would be to get some of our tradespeople involved. Aaron and Micah have worked really hard in the searing heat but they've had a great time and really enjoyed the experience. They we're delighted to be there for the great unveil where the family get to see the transformation this morning".
The programme will be screened at a later date.
