City centre parking charges set to rise

The cost of car parking in Gloucester is going up.

The city council is proposing small increases of between 10p and 50p depending on how long you park and where.

The council is dividing the car parks into three zones depending on how close they are to the city centre. Zone one (central) includes Eastgate Roof top, Longsmith Street, Kings Walk, Ladybellegate and Southgate Moorings and will have the biggest increase in charges.

Zone two covers Barbican, Hampden Way, Hare Lane South, Station Road, Westgate Street and St Michael's Square. Zone three includes North Warehouse, Great Western Road, Castlemeads, Hare Lane North and GL1.

Charges for parking all day remain unchanged except for Great Western Road which will see an increase of 20p on all its tariffs. The charge for GL1 will remain £4 for up to two and a half hours maximum stay.

An evening charge of £1.50p will be introduced for Southgate Moorings.

A report to the next city council cabinet meeting on March 8 says £30,000 of any increase in revenue will be allocated for car parks improvements.

"There have been no price changes in our car parks since 2012 when the tariff was reduced," says the report. "The city has also invested including a major refurbishment of the Eastgate Centre Rooftop car park and the introduction of a new pay on foot system.

"Whilst the city council continually strives for efficiencies, the current level of charging is not sustainable.

"Whilst the council is aware of its legal obligations when setting charges, it is recognised that this modest increase continues to keep Gloucester city centre competitive with other nearby towns and cities. It remains below 2004 levels and is cheaper than off street and some private car parks in the city.

"The tariff will be on a zone basis to encourage use of all the car parks, lessening the burden on the most popular. We are proposing the highest increase for centrally located car parks.

"The less central car parks will attract a lower or no increase."
