Be prepared: Five-day closure of major recycling centre
25th April 2017
The busiest household recycling centre in Gloucestershire centre will be closed for five days.
From 8-12 May, Hempsted Household Recycling Centre in Gloucester will be shut for work to accommodate more traffic and reduce queues.
The changes will take effect in June and are being made in response to customer feedback and increased use.
Work includes extending the upper road area and creating a multiple lane traffic system, as well as increasing the boundary size to accommodate heavy vehicles.
The plans will also make it possible for a reuse shop to be added in the future.
Alternative recycling facilities are available at Fosse Cross, Wingmoor Farm and Pyke Quarry, but residents may prefer to plan their visit before or after the closure dates to avoid queues at other sites.
Roger Smith, contracts manager for Gloucestershire County Council's joint waste team, said: "Hempsted is the busiest household recycling centre in Gloucestershire. We have listened to feedback from users of the site and are making these changes to address queuing times.
"Temporary closures are necessary for work to go ahead safely, but have been kept to a minimum. I would like to thank residents for their patience and cooperation."
A second closure in June will also be necessary during the final stage of work, but further details will be announced nearer the time
The changes to the road layout will take effect after work is complete in June
